How to Keep Your T-Shirt Looking Fresh (Without the Faff)
Your new tee deserves a long life. Whether it's a bold geometric design or a garment-dyed classic, a little care goes a long way. Follow these simple steps and it'll look as good in year three as it did on day one.
Step 1: Wash in Cold Water
Hot water is the enemy of a good graphic tee. Always select a cold wash — it protects the colour, preserves the print, and keeps the fabric from shrinking. Simple.
Step 2: Turn It Inside Out
Before it goes anywhere near the machine, flip it inside out. This protects the graphic on the front and keeps the colour looking vibrant for longer.
Step 3: Use a Gentle Detergent
Garment-dyed cotton is soft and relaxed by nature — treat it accordingly. A mild, gentle detergent is all you need. Skip the bleach entirely; it'll strip the colour fast.
Step 4: Separate on the First Wash
The first wash may release a little excess dye — that's completely normal with garment-dyed fabrics. Keep it away from lighter clothing that first time and you'll have no issues.
Step 5: Skip the Fabric Softener
It sounds counterintuitive, but fabric softeners can affect the texture of the cotton over time. Leave it out and the shirt will stay softer for longer on its own.
Step 6: Air Dry Where Possible
Air drying is the gold standard. Hang it up, let it dry naturally, and you'll avoid shrinkage while keeping that soft feel intact. It's also better for the environment — bonus points.
Step 7: Tumble Dry on Low (If You Must)
In a hurry? Use the lowest heat or delicate setting on your dryer. High heat is where shrinkage and damage happen, so keep it gentle.
Step 8: Remove Promptly from the Dryer
As soon as it's dry, take it out. Leaving it sitting in a warm dryer is how wrinkles set in — and nobody wants to iron a t-shirt.
Step 9: Iron with Care
If your shirt needs a press, never iron directly onto a graphic print. Either turn it inside out first, or place a thin cloth between the iron and the design. Keep the heat low and work quickly.
